I'm not sure what kind of vine it actually is but we always call it grapevine. Can it be used as driftwood? I think I might cut some this weekend and soak it in a barrel and see if it sinks. I'm not sure what states it grows in but it is everywhere in the southeast. It usually has some neat twists and bends where it comes out of the ground and starts up the tree.

I bought a piece of driftwood @ a lfs and the grapevine is the only thing I can compare it to. It has very weird lines/grooves all over it. Almost looks like someone used a dremel tool to make the grooves. Anyway....

Anyone ever used it in a tank?

I bought three large pieces for my 125 when I first set it up. It did not sink; I had to weigh it down with rocks. After a few days, a white spider-webby substance started growing all over the wood. This stuff wouldn't stop growing. Those three pieces are sitting in my garage and will probably never see a tank again.

Rule ONE:

Never use fruit branches in the aquarium as "driftwood..."

The temptation has always been there for myself, owning a pear tree in my own backyard....After trimming, I thought, DRIFTWOOD....After the usual soak and cleanse process, I placed it in my 180....5 days later, peach fuzz and spider looking webs appeared on the branches....Maybe I should of waited for the branches to dry a little longer or what...BUT...After making my complaint on MFK, the final and imediate response was not to use FRUIT BRANCHES in the aquarium....Stick to old wood washed up on river sides...I think the beach is a good place too....I collect my rocks from beaches around San Francisco....

thanks for the info! I'm glad I asked!;):) I'll take some pics of the driftwood I bought from the LFS. Maybe someone can identify it. The owner said one of his employees found it locally but I've never seen wood like that around here. Pics will be up later today.
