Grass pickerel?

no, youd probably be best off with at least 90g. they strike fast and could easily kill themselves on impact with glass if they were striking fast enough.

black banded sunfish perhaps, though they wont be eating other except REALLY small ones. you could do a nice community of black banded sunnies and darters in a 40g

How many redbreast could I fit in it? Maybe a pair of longears?
Rockbass? Just can't find very many native sunfish, only ones I have available are gills, redears, redbreast, maybe longears, and the occasional warmouth. I'm all about catching my natives, not buying.
UNLESS, it's cheap.

A 40 gallon breeder is just big enough for one mid-sized sunfish, such as a redbreast, longear, warmouth, or rock bass. A bluegill or redear needs more space than that. If you want to keep more than one sunfish in that tank, you can go with any of the Enneacanthus species (banded, blackbanded, bluespotted). These all occur in Florida and are compatible with most 'community' natives such as minnows, killifish, and darters, but will still eat small feeders such as juvenile guppies.

There are some small Lepomis species such as orangespotted and bantam sunfish which could be kept in a group in that tank; they don't occur in FL but are occasionally available from online vendors. Pirate perch are another option.

I don't recommend keeping sunfish in pairs. You'll end up with one dominant fish who harasses the lower-ranked individual constantly. If you get a 75 gallon you could keep 3-5 mid-sized sunfish, which is a more tenable group.

Dont get a Grass Pickerel and put it in a 90g tank by itself....Honestly, I dont know why people love this fish....It just sits up at the surface and stares....when you drop a goldfish it wont register in its head for a few seconds and then suddenly it goes bananas and eats it and sits up at the surface again......

I mean if your really into Pickerel i'd go for a Chain Pickerel...But thats my preference. Its whatever floats your boat dude.

I'm gonna have to go with Drew on this one, not a very active fish at all.
Since it's midway up the food chain, when it is not feeding, it is actively trying not to be seen.

I think you could keep any sunfish in a 40 breeder (excludeing crappie, and bass) true bluegills and others like swimming room so no more then 1 big one but a few of the others. you could have several longears or other species i would try for a sunfish pickerel cohab.
