how many pounds of gravel and sand is good enough for about 1" high of gravel/sand for a tank thats 6' long and 18" wide? my lfs only has 70 lbs of black gravel but i saw black sand and was thinking a mixture of the two would be better since my cichlids like to dig a lot... and I want black gravel/sand because my cichlids color would stand out more..

To each their own, but I don't much like to mix the two. With pure sand, detritus doesn't really settle into the substrate much. With gravel, you can just vacuum it without sucking out the substrate. With a mix, junk still gets into the substrate, and you can't vacuum it.

I plan on mixing it, to each their own I guess, I have a powerhead that moves all the crap to a corner anyway. I think a sand / gravel mixture is the natural look I've been looking for, just gotta find some nice driftwood first lol.
