I know that red and black gravel/sand brings out the colors for bichirs, and I intend to do so for my lapradei. However, I'm worried that he might swallow sand/gravel along with the Hikari Sinking pellets. Are there any solutions to this problem? Thanks in advance.

They can generally pass sand, but often they can't pass gravel, which why sand or BB tanks are recommended for bichirs in general.
Sand is better for Polys because they are always sliding on the ground and lying their, on gravel they could get bad abrasions. I would get some sand.
