Hey im usually a sand person in large tanks but i want to do gravel in my 110. But gravel for my 55 mario tank cost a small fortune so i was hoping there was a cheaper solution for substrate in large quantities like from home depot or something. I keep reading polished rocks but dont know of this is safe. Any other ideas welcome.

Pea gravel from home depot, landscapers or straight from a quarry will work. Places like home depot will likely have graded and washed amounts so are pretty desirable.

I've used gravel from both the box stores and quarries with no ill effects. Just be sure to look for plain gravel of the size you want and wash it thoroughly.

cant beat HD pea gravel , just one thing though , put it in thin ....detritus ends up underneath ,and a thick layer of gravel this size makes it tough to vac....conversely,a thin layer is the easiest maintenance there is short of no substrate.

When I bought lapis lustre blasting sand I noted it was available in different sizes ranging from very fine to gravel. I bought #1/c which is similar in size if not slightly bigger than pfs but closer in appearance to playsand, it was $12 for 100#. Didn't catch the price on the larger grades.

I dont want sand. I have a spiny eel who would make a mess of sand.

I was just worried cause the gravel said polished pea gravel. But its super cheap so i would like it if its possible.
