I'm finially moving the last of my fish to my 75 tomorrow. I'm planning on using their old cycled 20 gal long as a Q tank. The 20 gal is currently in my living room. My parents aren't really interested in having it there without gravel. I could move it to the basement, but would rather put it off until I'm done stocking the 75.

Should the Q tank be fine with the gravel? Would this be likely to prevent me from seeing any signs of disease?

I also have a snail in the 20. It can be hard to feed sometimes, because the fish are always stealing its food if I don't hand feed it(place the snail directly on the food). The 20 is easy to do this with. Can it be kept in the Q tank as long as I'm not using meds? Is it likely that it could spread disease if I move it to the 75 later on?

Thanks

by the way I'm thinking of getting kissing gourami's or a four-lined pimelodus. An opaline gourami has been ok with my bichir, so I'm hopeing that kissing will be too. Possibly an African butterfly fish, but my gourami can be nippy and they eat live food. So I'll have to think on that one.

i think a kissing gourami would be ok with butterflys, not like opalines or golds lol, i thnk a snail will be ok in the 20 just be careful what meds u use, you could mive it into a breeding trap in the 75 for the duration of treatment 4 lines can get nasty when they get bigger ime but give it atry all the same if you are willing...

Yea, the butterfly is probably not a good idea with the opaline. I'm probably not going to get all three species. I'm having a hard time choosing. Was considering four-lines, because they are listed as a possible fish to keep with bichirs on the bichir forum and they look good for a smaller sized cat.

Thanks, I'll probably end up getting a four-line or some kissing gourami's

I wouldn't do gravel in a quarantine tank. If a new fish does have something, it's now in the gravel as well and will be a pain to clean out prior to adding a different fish to quarantine.

A Q-tank really should be bare bottomed so it can be cleaned easier and not have stuff in it that will absorb any meds.

I keep my quarantine without gravel as well. I do add a few rocks and a clay flowerpot just to give some comfort to fish.

no gravel just keep it empty till you need it have extra media or filter running on the 75 when needed set up the tank when done clean everything and put it away...

Set the tank up nice for the parents with plants and community fish (unless they've expressed preference for something else). Then get yourself a new cheap 20 kit at wally world, etc. to use as a q tank in the basement.

Thanks, I'll probably move it to the basement tomorrow. I'll just put all of the cycled water in a tub during the move. I'll soak the filter media, so it doesn't dry out. Since the fish in the 75 have already been exposed to the gravel, I'll probably move the gravel to the 75.

Was going to get another 20, but I've decided that a 75 and a q tank are enough for me at the moment with college. Maybe later on I'll change my mind. I mostly wanted to put the move off for my convenience, but it makes sense that parasites could infect the gravel.
