I decided im going to have to use extra gravel i have laying around to put in with my bioballs in my wet dry filter. Has anyone ever does this before? should i use a bigger pebble rock or a smaller pebbel rock?

Bacteria will definitely grow on the gravel but more surface area, ie the larger gravel would work better. Porous rock like lava rock or bio max is ideal though.

smaller gravel = more surface area.
larger gravel = more flow.

bacteria will certainly grow, undergravel filters work great.

i assume that the use of gravel is to reduce cost? could you use seachem matrix or pond matrix? a lot of other media i think would have more surface area

Matrix works great in all types of filters...I have in the bottom drawer of my tower sump submerged....I has lots of surface area for BB to grow.

You definitely want to use a rough or porous rock.
