bake gravel? seems a bit extreme to me, i'd say just rinsing it will be fine.

you know i went to orchard supply and bought 40lbs of rock and washed it REALLY good. It looked fine for a day or so then it got really cloudy. I solved it by doing water changes every week for a month. My only complaint is the color looked different on the rocks afterwards

You need to be very careful with what you choose. If its beach gravel from the ocean and you use it in freshwater it may leach salts into your tank. Also, if you use limestone it can kill your fish as well as using corals in a freshwater set up. Usually boiling the rock will kill any bacteria. Baking may cause the rock to explode.

I would just buy similar gravel that was intened for aquarium use. IMO you will spend way too much time rinsing the pebbles to get the dirt off of them.

correct me if im wrong, but i thought baking rocks at high temps is a real bad idea, because the air trapped inside the rocks will expand and can cause the rocks to shatter and break.

I think that might be the case if they arent dried out for a while. I believe that is caused by the water in the rock expanding as it gets hot.
