I saw a couple of these threads today so I thought i would share my remodel too.

I recently made the switch from gravel (Vigoro Pea Gravel) to sand (pool filter sand). I really like the result. I had thought of waiting until I move to make the switch but I had a misbehaving fish I was trying to get an attitude change out of. The thought occured to me after a post here that changing the enviornment might change his demeanor. It didn't. I finally returned him to the LFS. I miss him but my community is very active and peaceful now.

Anyways, here is the before. All the structures came with the tank when I bought it. I never really loved them but it was a start. Then I added the gravel and plastic plants. Didn't love any of those either. This was my first large tank in many years so I started slow with regards to decor.

Here is the after. I still have a few changes to make before I'm done. I decided to finally give live plants a try and got duped in to the Petco tubes that apparently are not underwater plants. I am going to try some java fern since it's supposed to work well with low light and possibly my oscar too. I am really loving the sand in here!

You can see the white ribbon and kyoto grass plants. If you didn't already know, learn from my, and others, mistake. It says 'Aquarium Plant' on the tube and even gives you directions for planting them but they are bog plants. After I got home and planted them, I went online to learn a little more about them and that's when I learned of the scam. It was a cheap lesson anyways and for the next week or two while I come up with an alternative, they will look nice.

I also replaced an ugly tree trunk structure with the one in this photo. You can see the one I didn't like in the first picture all the way on the right.

When I went to replace that trunk from the previous picture, one of my clown loaches was stuck in it! I'm not exagerating either. I had only noticed three at a time for a couple days swimming around.

When I picked up the structure, I saw the tail of one of the loaches sticking out of a small tunnel inside a root. I thought he was just hiding. I shook it a little and tried to coax him out. I noticed he was coated with a very thick sticky slimecoat. It didn't seem right. He was still moving but hadn't backed out at all.

I try to hit the structure with a hammer to crack it but it was made of some kind of indestructable plastic. I grabbed a saw and carefully cut of the limb that he was stuck in. Once that was done, I could get my fingers on his tail. I tried to pull him out and he would not budge! Finally, i got some pliers and began opening the root like a crab leg. Once I got down about half way, I tried pulling him again. It was tight but he finally came out...and fell right to the bottom of the tank :WHOA:. I reached in and nudged him and he reacted. It took about 4 more nudges before he swam and stayed upright. I thought he may not make it but by the next day, he was ok. Whew. I almost lost the guy. And yes, I was very nervous when I was excavating him.

In honer of him, I removed another structure that looked like it may trap my loaches and replaced it with three artificial logs from Petsmart. I stacked them like you see in the photo. There is enough darkness for them to hide but there is no labrinyth of tunnels for them to get stuck in.

Has anyone tried that ehiem battery operated vacuum? How does it work for removing waste from sand? I have a gravity vac and a python but they don't seem to be able to lift some of the heavier waste from the pleco especially.

If you want to save the bog plants you can try growing them as floaters, sort of like a riparium.

And some of those tubes are truly aquatic. Wisteria, java fern, and amazon/argentine swords are all true aquatic plants.

Yes. I should have mentioned that. They are mixed in together on the same shelf and packaging but some are aquatic.

do yo u have a hob filter as IU ruined my aquaclear with sand getting in the impellars. To me sand is harder to keep clean but I do like the look of it.

No, I have 2 canister filters (FX5 & Aquatop CF-500UV). The pool filter sand seems to be weighted nicely. It doesn't suspend in the water. I cleaned the FX5 the other day for the first time since I did the sand and there was almost nothing in there. And that was after I added the sand to a half full tank while the filters were running.

Tank looks way better with the sand! Looks much more natural. That live grass plant that they sell there. Yeah, totally vamboozled me and my girl friend with her angel tank too. When we got them planted and home to post pics one of my buds on Ofish informed me it was a bog plant. Surely, it started to rot away and die being fully submerged so she just threw them away. Lesson learned.

I had my CL in my 125g w/ my Oscar but he was making snacks out of them so now they are growing out in my GF's 40g breeder.

I also have a similar issue with the python and picking up waste off the substrate. It'll get it into the bell but sometimes when you remove the bell from the water the waste just dumps right back out because it was just sitting in limbo in the bell while doing the wc. If you remove the bell you will get a much heavier suction but be forewarned. You can suck the sand up very easily like this so stay a few inches above and just get the waste. I actually removed a whole 100lb of Play Sand from my tank w/ this method. No bell = great suction. I've also been curious about the battery operated waste cleaner since it doesn't involve doing a whole wc and is something you could do daily. Luckily for me my 2 Tinfoil Barbs clean the whole substrate surface when lights go out, lol. They'll eat anything, including half undigested food from feces.

Thanks! I like it too. I used my brothers tank as a guinea pig for the sand. I liked it in his so I switched.

I have not had one problem with the CL's in there. I put them in at 2-2.5" with the O when he was about 4". They've been together for 4 months or so. They have plenty of places to hide and are quick as hell. I have noticed that when I put feeders in that are the same size as the CL's, Oscar will get excited and go right at them but still not even blink at the CL's. He could swallow the smaller ones whole if he wanted to but it appears he likes their company. At least for now. If he goes after them, I may get rid of him. I lke the CL's so much I'm considering a CL only tank next.

I started with 4, they are up to 4". I rehomed 3 for a friend so I have 7 now. They have been much more active since the sand, new decor and added 3 CL's. They are ton's of fun.

the sand looks great! glad you converted. i have sand in all my tanks now after switching one.

Roland,

Where did you get the pool sand? How much was it? From the pics it looks white?

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks

No Problem.

I got it at Home Depot for like $7/bag. It looks light brown when you wash it but once you put it under the tank lights, it looks much brighter.

The picture is from my Blackberry and it has made the sand look even whiter. It looks almost like it's glowing in the photo. If I could take a more realistic photo I would but it does look whiter in the tank than on the shelf.
