I have one more Q before I do this .

I vac my gravel every week , I know with sand you try to skim the top because
you cant plunge the vac into the sand .

Dose this mean over a period of time all the wast will settle deep into my sand
and my tank will take on a heavy bio load ?

It is pretty unavoidable for waste to get down into the sand. I suggest skimming the surface with the vacuum once a week. Every other week, after you skim the surface with the vacuum, stir all the sand. Stirring it will release any trapped gases and it will bring buried waste to the surface. After you stir it, skim the surface with the vacuum again.

i always shut my filters down when i agitate the sand. dont know if its needed or not but i kinda figured the sand would be hard on any moving parts in the filter.

Good idea the sand will DESTROY filter motors . Tiny grains will cause problems if caught in motor
I had sand and hated it over time it was a pain to vacum not to mention I was stupid and didnt take into account that NY beach sand due to erosion was replaced with sand imported from the desert and even though the sand was sunk (ofcourse I cleaned it let it sit in large bucket of water for couple weeks)
It was a silicate machine causing algae on sands surface . I removed it after couple months

Substrate = The color of your Piranha .
Between these two video of my piranha lye a side by side
comparison of what happens to the color of Piranha with different substrates

I Made the change from the Black gravel to the sand , What do you think Like it Or not ?
I think it was a change for the better . It sher makes the Piranha color stand out .

I also think the black back ground for viewing with the light sand really sets it off .
