Just started planted tanks but I'm going to keep gravel vacuuming mine. I won't do it as often and I'll be much more gentle than in my other tanks but I'd like to keep it fairly clean for now. You really don't want to disturb the roots though so I'll stay away from the root plants like swords. It also depends on how heavily planted you are. I don't think it's possible in a lot of heavily plants tanks and all those plants can probably use the fish waste to replenish the substrate anyway.

i just disturb the detritus and what not and suck it up with my python.

i do it for mine. i dont go into the gravel just over the top. move it around to kick up the dirt and suck it out of the tank.
