Do gravel cleaners work with sand on the bottom?
if not, how should I clean sand bottom tanks?

cleaning sand takes a different approach than cleaning gravel. When its time to clean the sand, stir the first inch of sand, until you can see the water change its tint. At that point, you can then gravel vac whatever settles back onto the sand, and siphon most of the yucky water out and proceed like any other water change. Whatever you dont get, your filter will. Monitor your filter more closely when using sand.

just hold above the sand like a 1/4 inch so you dont suck it up

oh so if I don't be careful gravel vacs can suck up sand?
is that what sturgron was saying? while the vaccum is off, stir the sand THEN turn it on?

oh o.k.
