What is the best type of gravel for a planned tank?

I would recomend a Laterite mixed with standard gravel. Flourite will work good to. Lay the laterite in below the gravel layer. Also wood is a good additive to help the plants have something to anchor to.

I use AB Terralit in the first layer, then a mixture of Flourite and Estes "Bits O Walnut" gravel.
