I am curious....why are bichirs "jumping" fish? Like eels, they have a reputation for finding the smallest crack in any lid and leaping for freedom, perhaps? Why? Bad tank water, too small a tank? Or just a fish seeing if he can fly?

I don't often see bichirs 'jump' in the strictest sense of the word though they certainly are escape artists. Perhaps they just want to see if there is something more tasty to nibble on in another part of the world. Whatever the reason, they do have a tendency to wriggle through even small openings in the tank top and then fall to earth (or floor, as the case may be).

bullied/stressed fish of such land-capable forms seek to jump out as a means of escaping their aggressors/unpleasant conditions in their natural habitat

arowanas jump in nature to catch flying insects

i dunno why eels tend to do it tho

in the wild they jump to escape small pool in hopes of finding a better hunting ground proviving it with a big tank is the best option even 55 gal is not a river its a studio apartment they cant leave
