Does anybody know if gray reef sharks are kept in captivity and if they are protected or not? I think they are a really cool sharks and it would be nice to have something a little different than the black tip or white tip that is normally kept.

You know a LOT more than I do, but I'm going to give my input regardless of its marginal value.
I think I do remember juvenile specimens being offered somewhere on the internet (yeah, that helps). Unfortunately it was a while ago. I'm guessing that they're something like lemon sharks where a petstore gets a few pups, a few people buy them, realize they're too big, and then what little demand there was for them to begin with crashes.
With enough money and determination however, I'm sure you can get just about anything you want. I'd suggest finding a private collector. Assuming you live in the US though, the closest they get to you is Hawaii, so shipping is going to be... tough.
Best of luck though!

Thanks man. I figured I would just ask if anyone knew anything. You never know what info people have unless you ask:)
Your right I am sure hawaii is as close as they get. So being here in ny means I will have a good shipping bill.lol

Hmmm... I believe Gray reefs are only suited to Public Aquariums - as we're talking about a ORV Requiem shark that can exceed 8ft in length.

So off-hand I would guess that you're looking at roughly at least a 100,000-125,000 gallon tank to be able to attempt to keep one in for life.

I am pretty sure from the info I gathered that female gray reefs can reach up to 8' in length but males tend to stay around 5.5'-6' long. Both male and female normally don't reach 8'. Also some thing that I could not find a clear answer on was if they were true ORV sharks. Some places I looked said that can stop for short periods of time. In the end I am interested in this shark cause it doesn't seem much different that having a black tip. There seems to be a real potential for those to reach sizes of 5'-6' and if the gray is a male its seem that there is little difference in size but I could be wrong let me know what you guys think.

Having spoken to people at the MBA, they're fairly aggressive - they've had some in the big tank with hammerheads and the occasional great white, and they're the ones that will attack the other animals with greater frequency (until the white gets antsy and takes a chomp out of one of them).

I thought that they were ORV sharks but was'nt sure.

I assume we're talking Carcharhinus amblyrhychos Gray reef shark, not Carcharhinus perezi Caribbean/Gray reef shark.

They are indeed ORV sharks. Most range into the 7' range, but males do stay smaller. A touch bigger than the black tip, and much bigger than the black tip reef sharks.
Tend to be a bit snippy with tank mates. Permit needed to collect in most areas, not to have. These guys like LOTS of flat swimming room, and you'll see big bursts of speed from them.
Reef sharks are the popular shark to dive with due to the mob mentality during feedings. A very easy shark to get to frenzy with food in the water.

Yeah I was talking about Carcharhinus amblyrhychos. I figured that a gray reef wouldn't be too difficult to care for being that I am going to be building a setup to hold my lemon shark. Those require quite a large system and are quite aggressive too.
