OK, so ... i have a question on what you guys would do ...
so there is this SW great barracuda at the local lfs in the **** town i live in ... i know nobody around me is going to have the means to keep a fish of that size the way it needs to be treated ( including me, i don't believe these fish should even be sold to the general public ) but i currently have a 125gal ( yes i know slow down let me finish)
that i could keep it in few a couple weeks ( he is only about 10" right now)

BUT HERE IS THE KICKER

i was going to build a big ass plywood tank 500-600gal ( maybe bigger now looking at this) but i seen this little cuda and they way I'm looking at it is that ... look nobody around me is going to be able to take care of him the way i can .. i can treat him the best out of all the people around me and give him the best life he can outside of being in a museum aquarium or the ocean

i know that even a 500-600gal tank is not what he needs but i can give him the best i can do to make sure he lives longer then being in some 55gal at some house with a owner that has never ran a SW tank before and kills him in two weeks, where i know i can give him a few years ... idk guys ... i just know he isn't going to be treated the way he should be either way and i really just want to help him out the best i can ...

makes me wanna cry seeing him in the 55gal he is in ... i just dont really know what to do

and also the lfs will give him to me for 10$ because they say he already ate what they paid for him :OMG:

just give me your opinion its just about the ethical treatment of a animal that's already been screwed

let the bashing begin :nilly:

not a good idea. Barracudas grow massive and they swim around 24/7. Can't imagine on in a tank. It's more likely to successfully keep a shark than a barracuda.. Can't believe lps would actually sell them.

All you do is encourage them to get in fish they can't provide for properly or most people. I've found alot of lfs will order fish on the list if it sounds cool but have no clue what its needs are ie the whole whole money/ethics debate. imo if you feel you can offer it a good home go for it.. but imo once you can't house it either find it a home that can or euthanize it... watching a fish in to small a tank suffer for weeks or monthes until it succums imo its the most unethical choice you can make in these instances.

Id pick him up if youre 100% sure youre going to have your 600gallon soon, your right in saying that youll probably give him the best care. But also be aware that he is probably going to eat everything

i would probably give the NC aquarium a call once it was 2.5 ft or so ...but if that was not a option i would euthanize .. stunting growth is NOT a option for me .. its very EFFED up in my opinion

i really think i could give him a good couple years .. and i talked with the owner today about it not being a good animal to bring into the store .. and that i would contact the better business burrow if i seen more of them come in the doors lol not sure if they could do anything about it but i seamed to have scared her lol

If one feels so inclined, buy him and release him. The ocean is where he belongs.

If he keeps for 2 years it will be because he's stunted as those fish need lots of space to swim (they go up to 40 feet a second) and turn around. Making him adjust to living in an 8 x 2 or 8 x 3 tank for 2 years is not doing him any favors.

BS. Yes these fish grow huge and swim fast but they do not swim around 24/7. They stay in one spot for a long time.
OP, I would call an Aquarium before you actually get the fish to make sure it would take it...

Release it in the ocean... summer times coming, waters are warming up and he should not have a problem making his way down south

maybe keep him for a month just for the cool factor then release him into the ocean so i dont have to deal with the heartbreak if he dies ? i will start going to the beach often here in a little bit once i get my boat engine cleaned up... i think this is what im going to do ... so that way i know for a fact he doesnt die from human neglect ... whatever happens after i put him in the ocean is just nature course ... and i think i could live with myself that way
