Well I've been researching these guys for the past month and I finally got my hands on one! This is the first bichir I've owned and excited to watch him grow into a monster! He's only 2 inches right now so being so small what's the best thing for him to eat? I figured blood worms and ground up tilapia?? Or should I just get the really small nls pellets??

I fed my little guy sinking carnivore pellets at first until he was big enough to ttake talapia chunks and shrimp. I had to use a knife and cut the pellets into smaller bits so he could actualy fit them in his mouth and swallow them without choking. When they are that small, I found it easier for them to eat if you pre soak the pellets before you feed.

Great looking bichir by the way. Good luck with him/her.

Feed it twice a day, I got mine at 2 inches and fed it shrimp pellets, massivore, blood worms and also live fathead minnows. You also want to do water changes every couple of days. I kept mine in a 20 long and it took him about 3 months to hit 5" so around 1" per month. The fish in question is currently at the 8"-9" mark and doing very well he is about as thick as a big toe. for the record I got him in late May.

I have two ornates, 8"-9" and one thats 11". the bigger one is very long, whereas the smaller one is quite thick and bulky. they are very personable fish though, and they are all different. my big one will hide most of the time and be nocturnal but the smaller one sits right next to my desk and watches me all day. hes very friendly.

good luck with yours! if you follow my power feeding and waterchange schedule you should get good growth from him. the live food and or massivore really helps them to put on size.

That guy is really thick so i think he could eat the baby pellet from cichlid gold, my birchir eats food from the surface of the tank beacause i use floating. If you give your birchir some time it will probibly go up for air and see the food. sinking food can also be used...

Oscaroo you are up late, did you work out your mum's WIFI password?

yes bichirs may feed from the surface I have had my ornate do this before but in my experience it is only when they are very hungry that they go to the surface. Feeding a bichir from the surface has absolutely no benefits as the other fish will always get to the food first. If anything you want to teach the bichir to take sinking food after the lights are out, that way you know when you put them in your main tank they will get food every single night and the other active diurnal fish will not steal it from them.

My small ornate used to surface feed occasionally and I would give him cichlid gold but anything I put in the tank now my giant gourami will eat, so I put food for my bichirs and clown knife in after lights out and that way they all get fed. If you are wanting to add hikari gold to your bichirs diet for nutrients then by all means just crush them against hte glass til the small bubble of air comes out, that way you can just sink it to the bottom.
