I saw this and have decided to build a quad bulb version of this idea for my 55gal planted tank. I can easily get over 2watts per gallon and have all of the lumens I want.
 
I did something like this for lights above my 240. It works good. I used the 100w 6500k CFL twist lights from lowes. They use about 18 watts a piece. I used aluminum flashing and rivets to build me enclosures. The only thing I would do different is to polish the inside of the aluminum for better reflection before I riveted it all together.
 
Really cheap..
Both price and looks.
Don`t think I would have that on a tank in my house...fish room maybe.
Clever idea though.
