My girlfriend wants to upgrade her 10g to a 29g, this is awsome for me, because I won't have such a hard time explaining my 240 im getting this winter.

I want this to be a smooth transfer, So I was thinking of using the current 10G as a sump for the new 29G. Since she has a cheap HOB filter right now I figure 80% of the BB live in the gravel. Do you think I could use the gravel from the current tank as the bio media in a wet dry setup? or would I be better off buying new biomedia. Then just putting the gravel in the bottom of the sump for a couple months until the new bio media colonizes? The reason I don't just transfer the gravel from the 10 to the 29 is I hate the way it looks, and want to plant this 29 with carpet.

I plan on surprising her with this Im going to go buy the tank and have it drilled so basically come home while she's at work and swap it over.

I know a wet/dry might be overkill for this but I love having the water level stay constant, plus easy water changes.

i would leave the gravel in the 10 but either pick up a mesh bag for it or DIY yourself one out of some window screen and fishing line... that way in a few months when you want to pull it out (if you want to.. i dont see a problem with leaving it in their forever) you wont have to fight to get it out... id throw whatever media you have in the tiny hob in their as well
