Has anyone ever used this? How did it work out? I have two tanks that I want to put a 3D background in, one with a gar and one with a turtle in it. I've read everything about using the regular great stuff and then using concrete on it but I don't want to use that in my tanks just because I don't like the thought of that crumbling or leaching anything into the water.

I guess what I really want to know is how well it holds up (turtle could give it a beating) and does it have any effects on water? (wouldn't want my gar to end up as a floater)

This is the guy who put that stuff to the test! ;) Pond foam is AWESOME and I have used it on nearly every tank in my house, it is 100% fish safe once cured (24 hours). It doesn't stick very well to acrylic and I would advise you not to use too much., It floats VERY well so if you use too much it will be counter productive and pull away from the surface/seperate from what it was stuck to.

If I were to make a background entirely of this, could i just use silicone to hold it in then? Did you seal it with epoxy?

no need to seal it at all. It can be carved to whatever design you want without having to seal that either, the problem is it float too hardm it will peel itself off the tank backgroun if you were to make a BG out of it. Holding it on with silicone would not be an option as it would pull off the silicone. This stuff is great but you just can't get very thick with it. Trust me, I learned this the hard way. Dig through some of my old threads and you will see some applications I have used pond foam with (specifically 3D backgrounds), I've tried a number of different uses with it.
