so i have some green algae in my tank and i would like to know if it is good or bad, i have heard it is ok but i think its starting to get out of control. it started out small and then i left it thinking my plecos would eat, but its now the size of a quarter atleast and its starting to spread to the other half of the tank and on the gravel. i would really like to know what is the cause of this and if i should get rid of it or should i just keep it under control (just to a min). thanks for your help

It looks like cyanobacteria to me. What are your water parameters?

um there are and its a freshwater tank, i just did a 40% H2O change last week but yesterday i did a 15-20% change so i would like to know do i need to do another?

nitrate: about 10
nitrite: 0
GH: 180 or so, i have hard water here
mg/L: 0
KH: 200-215
pH: 8.0

ok but im still confussed tho is it good or bad in my tank, do i need to do a 50% change tom along with scraping or should i just do water changes?

if you are very hesitant, just remove that rock and pour boiling water on it...algaes dont do much on the positive side..algaes are just like plants..and lupin might be right:)

If it bothers you, remove it. But you really need to get to it's source. It is usually a sign of an over abundance of nutrients. And in that respect it is helpful by removing them. It will spred if you don't get a handle on it tho, and Blue/green is tenacious.

A UV will help with any floating bits too.

W/Cs will help remove the excess nutrients (just treat/stabilize the water well).

Whats the ammonia level in the tank?

And what is the chemistry of your tap water?

how often are your waterchanges, and how much do you change? you may want to cut back on feeding-or watch the amount that you feed. you also may need to step up your waterchanges to every week..

it looks like your nitrates are good (under 10ppm) but i would boil the rocks, syphon the gravel, cut back on light and feedings.
