Very cool, Conner!
Are the sunfish fullgrown allready?
Mine reached 8" in one and a half years!
Became a real bully in the end...
Lovely Gars!

The sunfish aren't full grown yet. They're only about 5.5-6". But I LOVE the one sunnies pelvic and anal fins are a deep black edged in a pure white. He only flashes them when he's excited, but his whole body darkens, and he flips out these awesome looking fins. You can kind of see the colors in the second sunfish pic, but I'll try to get a better picture of it.

Your green sunfish look very healthy. I love that spotted gar - sure is a beaut!

Thanks. The pics don't do any of them justice. The sunfish have a lot of iridescent markings along their sides that flash when they turn just right. Its visible in the tank lighting, but the camera flash just washes it out. I need to get a better camera.

I have to say the spotted is one of my fav gars. He's got some great pattern, and I love the speckling on his belly (none of the others have that). Although my Florida's have a lot of personality too, not to mention eating anything that I toss in the tank.

How do they get along? I was thinking of doing a similar setup but thought the Suns might get a little too nippy for the gar.

My sunfish became real agrresive when maturing, but that may have been due to me keeping only a single one.
He kept chasing and hurting the same sized SD's.
Was lovely though.
When i still had my tank planted, he'd disappear completely due to his colouration.

The sunnies completely ignore the gar. They only care about each other. Occasionally my anthurus pike female will face off with the dominant sunny, but that's just if he invades her turf. Same thing with my freddy. They'll gill flare and wiggle back and forth til one of them backs down, and everything is chill.

The gars go where they please, and everybody else ignores them. it's like they dont' feel threatened enought to defend their turf, because the gars don't look similar enough to be a threat.

The tank is starting to get a little crowded as the fish grow, but I think the fact that pretty much everyone started the same size at the same time is really helping aggression. They pretty much have a pecking order they established months ago, and they stick to it and don't bother each other. It's actually a very peaceful tank, considering its a 55g with 2 green sunfish, a bluegill, a friedrichsthalii, 2 managuense (babies), 2 anthurus pikes, 3 gar, a bichir, and a sun/eclipse catfish :O.
