i have a 55gal near the sun running an AC 110, AC70, and a 55gal mechanical filter/powerhead combo. so 3 more than worthy filters.

a month ago my water in there became green so i did a little research and came across "blue-green algae" but i don't think its that because the description is way off.

my water is just plain green like a golf course's water. there is no "slimy matted" algae at all. the only algae in there is that really hard/small green dots on the glass which i have in all my tanks but my other tanks have always had clear water for years so its not that either!

i moved all my fish 2 days ago and did a 95% water change (about an inch of water left). the water was crystal clear again... and now 2 days later, its becoming green again!!!

if i do nothing and let it sit, what happends is my water just becomes increasingly green until i can't see the fish not 1 inch away from the glass... so im forced to change large glops of water every single day just to see them...

what the hell is this???? it has no physical form other than the water being green (increasingly)... how do i kill it??????

Sounds like a really intense Algae Bloom. Ive battled them before, and the only thing I found effective (cause i tried tons) was buying a UV sterilizer. about 90 bucks, lightbulbs are easy to replace, and they will make ur water crystal clear. I swear by my Coralife 9W UV sterilizer now. Its your only hope.

It's probably euglena. Fish kept in this kind of water show superior health. The euglena constantly trap and recycle waste, and oxygenate the water when lit. You are lucky to have green water. Cherish it while it lasts.

But, if you really just want it gone so you can return to mediocrity: reduce lighting, reduce phosphates, start doing about 20% water changes every day and you'll likely kill it off. You don't need any expensive equipment.

oh... well its been gone now. i cant really reduce lighting, only wait for the season to change back to winter really. but if/when it comes back i'll "relish" it until my fish can't see well enough to feed again.

Hydrogen peroxide will fix this..
What it sounds like is you have a single cell algae bloom..
Look up "peroxide to kill algae"
It works wonders..
