Hi everyone I am really interested in getting a green phantom pleco (l200) and I was wondering if there was anyone who has any experience with them that could give me some tips on stuff like water chemistry, max size, best food, tank mates etc. thanks!

I was thinking about 1 of these when I had a community tank, lovely little fish, they mix with everything as long as they need the same setup and are not to aggressive (a lot of plecos fight with other plecos over territory) they can reach almost 9" but I think around 7" is more realistic. It will need aquarium safe wood to stay healthy, they are omnivores so feel greens as well as meaty foods. As for set up they need temp between 25-28c, soft water around 6-7.2ph, decent flow and well oxygenated water as well as the usual keeping amo 0 nitrItes 0 and notrAtes -20

What is the hardness of your tank and tap water? I think you'll find most fish from the Amazon do prefer the hardness on the lower end of the spectrum, but if you've got hard tap water and no access to clean rain water then making it softer requires something like an RO filter to remove the minerals from the water. Get a test kit for hardness and a TDS meter if you're concerned.

Also if they are softwater fish, how can I lower the hardness of the water in my tank?

I use tap water for mine but i also have a good bit of driftwood in the tank. If you have the chance to get one do it. One of my fav plecos. Mine are very active dont typically fight with any of my other plecos. They love green pepper too.

Ok I currently am using the tank i would like to keep the pleco in as a grow out for my frontosa so the water is pretty hard

Do you actually know the hardness, or just guessing/assuming it is "pretty" hard because of the current set up? You certainly wouldn't be the first person to keep a fish in less than ideal water, but I'd recommend being able to test it rather than just throwing in wood or coral and hoping for the best. Just try strike a balance somewhere between what would be ideal for the fronts and the phantom.
