I'm upgrading to a 120 gal in a few days and that'll leave me with an empty 50. I'd like to get 3-4 green scats to put in it and I was looking for a rough estimate on how long they'd be able to live in a tank this size. And what would be the best number to keep them in; 3,4,5? Thanks in advance for any help.

That may be too tight for the green scats. They get to be about 9-12" when full grown and they love to swim. It won't be bad when they are small, but I wouldn't put scats in a tank smaller than 6' long.

+1!

I'm on board with the notion that I shouldn't keep green scats in a tank that size for life, and trust me I don't intend to. I'm just wondering how long I'll have before I have to upgrade. Would they be able to live in a 50 for a year? A year and a half? Maybe two years? I'm just curious as to their growth rate, I haven't been able to find any material on their size other than 9-12'' fully grown as you said Tan.

In 6 months time our silver scats grew from approx. 5cm to approx. 10/12cm (they vary in size a little). That might give you an idea of growth rate. They doubled in size in 6 months, but of course the growth rate slows down with time. We have 4 scats in a 50 gallon and I can tell you that althou they are not uncomfortable, it's not a life, it's an existence - in a day or 2 they are moving into a 120 gallon. Hope this helps.
