Is this it’s mating dress? I was thinking it was a male due to the worming on it’s face but now seeing it darken up like this makes me believe it’s a female. Would it be possible for it to breed with my Red spot severum? Green sev is 3”, red spot is 6” male. Also have a 1.5” Heroes severus red tiger curare in tank. Let me know

Mine turned black around that size too, maybe related to mating. Still looks like a male to me. I’m not sure if they can breed, but from what I know they are all just color morphs of the same species, so it is probably possible.

that would be one ugly hybrid

Are the red ones selectively bred from gold ones, or are they hybrids?

This isn't breeding dress. It's likely camouflage coloration, either because the surroundings are dark or because it's trying to be submissive to a more dominant Heros in the tank. Any time I keep efasciatus in a tank with a dark background or substrate they go dark like this. A good indicator are the eyes -- if a fish had turned dark for spawning, the eyes would be glowing orange/yellow/red. It would also show a white chest. Notice how the eyes are dull here, which is indicative of a fish trying to camouflage itself.

Both males and females turn dark when in spawning/fry rearing colors.

Mine turns black when he's feeling territorial. This only happens when I feed him his favorite food.

That would make sense. With a 6” red spot in the tank, it’s not aggressive toward the green at all but the green always is careful around him rightfully so. and he’s got a pitch black ledge he loves hiding under i can’t even see him when he’s under there so camouflage it is
