I have a 5" green severum, 55G tank. I would like at least 1 more fish. What would go well with the sev?

Could I put a turquoise severum with it? If so, would it need to be around the same size as the green severum to avoid aggression issues?

I would think that a turquoise severum would be fine with a green severum in a 55g. I'd advise getting a turquoise the same size as your green to limit aggression. They'll at least be on an even playing field.

Severum's are teddy bears if treated right.
They make great community centerpiece fish,
and usually break up fights in the tank.
Notice the small mouths, they can't eat too much.
They can get territorial like any other cichlid, but if you got one slightly smaller or larger it might be fine.
Hiding spaces / tank size / clearly divided territories will help.

in my past experience, adding a new sev to an existing sev's territory (which is your whole tank right now) will result in the new fish getting clobbered, and he won't fight back.

if you added them both at once, you might have been okay. but once the existing fish is established, adding another is going to be trouble.

but you could try. just have another tank standing by in case of severe aggression.

Good point. Cichlids will be cichlids. Naughty little fish they are. That's why we love them so much!

Solution: Take the green sev out, re-aquascape the tank (move things around, etc), add the turquoise and green at the same time. The green sev won't recognize the tank as his territory so they'll both be able to establish their own territory at the same time.

u can only have one more cichlid with him i would do a firemouth.

id do a male firemouth and male convict, with the sev and call her stocked! well add some danios for dithers and a catfish of some sort!

so: 1 sev 1 male con 1 male firemouth 6 to 10 danios 1 catfish of some sort, then its stocked!

I actually have 3 small rotkiel (redhead) severums and 3 firemouths in my 50g right now.

there is aggression from the firemouths actually, but its not too bad.

all 6 fish were in the same tank at the store, so I added them all at once.

time will tell if things will stay fine as they get larger..

If you already are growig out some Rotkiel why get more. Ime it's best to add smaller fish to larger fish. If they are same saize they will almost always fight and hard. When you add a smaller one it knows not to mess with the big guy and stays out of the way. The big one does not see the small fish as a threat and it's ok.

Don't add any more fish. But blue acaras make great severum take mates.
