Is this what just normal green severums found in Australia will look like when grown up. This question is probably more or less focussed todards Japes lol.

Well the third photograph is a Hoplarchus psittacus, True SA Parrot Cichlid, which you won't find over here.

Keep an eye out for Severum, there are various different colour 'styles' getting around. How pure these are to natural strains of Heros efasciatus can't really be ascertained. Best I can do is post my three Severum.

Regular style female like you've posted in your first photo. Plain body scaling. She was hugely dominant and would often be in semi-breeding dress that was basically black/olive.

Smaller male which I would classify as the same variant as the larger male below. Lots of red and fluorescent blue as you can see. Will probably grow up to be a better quality version of this guy..

Note the scale patterning (possibly only present in males) and the subtle blue patterning on the face.

Now I don't have these fish anymore. They were sold to someone about 6 months apart who was looking to get into breeding them.

Original female and the last male I linked. Note vibrant colouration on the male and females breeding dress.

Hope that helps in some way. The key to buying Severum is to not be overly keen and shop around. As they're reasonably common, you can afford to go to a few shops looking for another species and pick out nice Severum if you come across them.

The last 2 males were sexable at about 2", and had noticable blue in the face.

Good too see people who now their stuff. I knew I wouldn't catch you out with the H.psittacus. I wish they were in Australia tho. I might have to encourage some importers.

The ones I see around always have the black on white stripes, which looks unappealling to me. I like the ones that are green from 2" onwards. I will shop around. Dad owes me a visit to the Brisbane LFSs so i'll pic and choose down there.

It would be better getting them from the one source so they look the same as adults right, to make the biotope look more realistic?

Thanks Japes.

H. psittacus are not a legal imports and most 'importers' won't bother as the market for imported SA Cichlids is very limited. Take L. dorsigera for example, I've got 4 F0 specimens which are legally allowed to be brought into the country, but they came in on a single shipment, which I believe has been the only one for the last 3 years, and I picked them up from a store that received specimens from that shipment over 9 months after it originally came in - and they were cheap. You won't have any influence on any importers, experienced and dedicated enthusiasts have been pushing for many years I'm sure.

Black vertical barring in Severums is a visible sign of stress or possibly dominance assertion. Juveniles in store tanks will almost constantly show it because they're mixed with so many others in such a confined space. Most comfortable adults will show half barring in the bottom half of their body, and some darker full barring when stressed (new additions to tank, rearraging decor, maybe even water changes).

Full dark barring will disappear past about the 3" mark and only the thick bar near the caudal peduncle will stay, and even only to a certain degree in some specimens.

One source always works, although some variance never hurt anyone - it's not a biotope anyway ;).

The list you gave wasn't a biotope?

Oh well, same source will work for me.

That would be why. Down at boondall (if your near Brisbane) they had about 4 6" green sevs that looked sweet. I wanted to get them but didn't have the 6' then. I will get 4 this time, as per the list.

Do you know if they are in asia yet? If so I might know someone who could get them.
