Hello friends, While having Discus for some time now I want to try Sevrums and no nothing about the fish, My head has been Discus only , So my question is can you mix green with reds or stick with the same and how many. They will have their own 160 tank to themselves. Thanks for reading.

You can mix them fine, only thing is that may lead to cross-breeding the lines. Severums aren't really that aggressive for New World cichlids so you can stock that 160 pretty heavily, especially if it's a 6 foot tank and the severums are the only fish that you'll have in there outside of some schooling fish. Think you can get away with 10 or even more as long as you maintain the water quality.

Same thing I'm doing with my 220. Right now I have 4 Severums, 2 greens and 2 Rotkiels. Everyone is great. I have a video but I don't know how to post them

IMO 10 sevs would be too crowded when they became adults. These fish can get 10+ inches and super thick - you want them to be able to swim without constantly bumping into each other. I would stick to around 5-6 and go with a large school of tetras, some cories & plecs and call it a day. That would be a good looking setup.

Though there's some evidence out there that most Severums have mixed blood anyways.

As far as I'm aware, most of the "greens" in the hobby are likely to be hybrids, similar situation to the midas/red devil mixes, unless you're sure of their pedigree then assume they're hybrids.

If you want a mix of severums why not try source some true species, you could probably get away with having 2-3 pairs in that tank, a mix of rotkeils, notatus and true H. severus would be nice.

I avoided saying that most of the 'greens' are hybrids, because I haven't looked too deeply into it (I'm not that interested in severums). But that is what I've heard, basically.

Indeed you can buy from reputable sellers to massively reduce the chance that they're hybrids. But like midevils, it really doesn't matter that much, if its a nice fish then its a nice fish. :)

i have a tough green in a 125 growing out......i bought it around a year and half ago at 2 inches.......now it is 5-6 inches.........
