My roommate has had a green spotted puffer in fresh water for nearly 2 years now, and I would like to correct this. Hes small, maybe 3 inches long and I would like to set up a spare 10 gallon 20x10x12 as a brackish tank to get him into brackish water asap.

But I just don't want to dump him in, does he need to be slowly acclimated back to brackish water?

I have never had a brackish tank, I assume that its mostly the same, it will use a hob filer and an air bubbler with a 15k light (so his colors will pop!)

salinity requirements?
do i need a hydrometer?
how much salt per gallon?

Thanks!

I'd give him 30g minimum. He's gonna grow as large as a Nerf football.

would you suggest setting up its own cycled tank as fresh, then adding the puffer, then gradually changing the water to brackish?
Yes, that would be best.

Figure 8 puffer is not what he said he has. It's a GSP. F8s do best in low-end BW SG of 1.005. GSPs need it higher.

Start adding marine salt to the tank the GSP is in. You want to increase the salinity slowly for the sake of the fish and to give the bacteria time to adjust. Yes GSPs can and should be in full salt water as adults.
