Ok, i miss having my GSP, I kept like 3 in a 10g and they stayed fine but the strongest killed the others, and he was left alone in a 10g eating anything. But i was wondering if i could keep a GSP in a 30g with a colony of shelldwellers, they get 3in but are equally as agressive if not more than the puffer.

id say no cuz the puffer could prolly give them a run for their money. they torture other fish in the night when you dont see until the fish dies or leaves and since they cant leave it kills them. and a 10g is WAAAY too small for even one puffer! 20L minimum!

Actually 30g is the minimum for a single GSP. If you want tank mates, wait until you get it up to marine conditions & then you can add a damselfish or clownfish, in a larger tank. Cichlids aren't BW fish anyway.

I saw puffers at walmart today and they looked awful! There was a giant fig 8 that could have looked beautiful but there was like 7 other GSP and 2 other f8 and it was awful! I might save that 4" fig 8 so half his life wont be like a concentration camp

By "saving" fish from Walmart, you are giving them the message that no how bad they mistreat them, they are still good sellers & will just stock more. Support your mom & pop stores that tank good care of their fish & reward them by purchasing a nice healthy one from them.

I've boycotted Walmart for over 10 years now, because of this.

i might take the worst off puffers and try to save them but with my last 3 i got two didnt make it... at least i tried and i think actually buying them is good and pointing it out to them as they get you the fish so they might pass it on... and sneaking in some medicine helps too :)

The only cichlid I know of that will actually live in brackish water are chromides, but I would hesitate to put them in with puffers. Past all the conflicting information about these guys (tank size mostly: pretty much the largest you can give them, but a 20gL bare minimum but preferably 30 since it has more water volume for the same foot print), there is one thing that everyone agrees on: for the common keeper specimen tanks are the only way to go.

darn walmart I had a guy at work buy two GSP's to put in his 10 gallon tank with some neon tetras and goldfish. I gladly rescued the puffers from him, and now am converting one of my tanks into a brackish tank. Although my loaches had to go down stairs from front and center attention upstairs, I think it will be worth it in the long run. I love those puffers, they seem to doing ok so far, but I am not holing my breath that they are gonna make it through a nice long life.

I agree with puffer punk, I boycott walmart as well, for fish anyhow, I still get some stuff there, but limit it alot and shop local stores. Last time I was in there, I just cant help but look at the crappy conditions that the fish have. There was a kid that got two africans, and the lady thought they would be fine in a bowl with some aeration. Going to petsmart is bad, but that is like ultra retardation there.

i do happen to agree with you. i started boycotting them since 2 puffers i tried to save died... its sickening cuz they have normally around 20-25 GSPs in a 10 gallon with about 15 plecos and some corydoras... its just cruel
