I am new to saltwater and have set up my first full marine tank, with some completely cured/cycled live rock from a quality pet store in town. i have been noticing all kinds of life on/in it, including a brittle star, some kind of tube/fan worms, snails, and just today i spotted something that looked kind of like an armless 6 pointed starfish on my rock. it was about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in diameter, and was very flat. I wasnt sure if it was a coral or sponge that i had no noticed before, or if it was a moving organism. Unfortunately before i could find my iphone to get a pic, it had moved out of site. Anyone have any idea what it is? Ive googled it for about an hour with no results.

Sorry I can't answer your question, I'm waiting on my tax refund to make the plunge into saltwater myself. I'm thrilled to hear stuff like this, I've heard of all kinds of surprises coming home on live rock, but FYI from what I've been told if the tank hasn't been totally cycled most if not all will die off.

Yeah, i keep hearing that too, MidwestMike, But the guy at my lfs told me thats a load of crap, and I will see little to no die off from his rocks if I salt the water properly and keep it filtered well. Since it was already a brackish tank and already had some bacteria in it, i'm sure this helped, but he was insistent that as long as my water parameters were correct, no die off would occur. He was right. I'm only 2 weeks deep, but i have seen no die off of any kind, the algae has already grown some, all the little organisms are thriving and eating, including the tube worms which have since covered almost all of the live plants. All his live rock is sold directly from active display tanks though, not from the ocean or recently shipped to the store. From what I understand, based on this experience, it is more about the live rocks being cycled and adapted to aquarium lifestyle than the tank itself being cycled. The rocks themselves will quickly seed the tank with all the bacteria and other stuff that it needs. This is despite ALL info i have read or been given online. My rocks and local info were given to me by 'Aquapets' in omaha nebraska. I highly recommend them.

So my tanks been up and running for two days now, went ahead and got some yellow tailed damsels today to push the cycle, to my surprise what I think is a small anemone has sprouted up. Plenty of tube worms as well

Careful with small nems, Mike. Might be aiptasia. If it is, you gotta decide whether to kill it or not. Variables differ for everyone. Most of the time, however, it's advisable to avoid later headaches and get rid of it now. Post a pic.
