green sunfish in 29 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Optimally, zero.

One would probably work since they usually dont get bigger than 6-8". 2 of them will most likely fight and there wouldnt be enough room. If you want to keep more than one get something like a 75+ gallon and get a small school of them.

They can supposedly get a foot long, although I have never seen one that long.

How many green sunfish can I put in a 29 gallon at the most?
One would be all I would do. They are very mean, and more than likely the dominant one would kill the others. I have one about 5 inches long in my 200 with my Malawi Champsochromis, and he is the king of tank, tho smaller than them.

I haven't had this experience.
All my greens have been fairly docile. They'll defend themselves aggressively if someone messes with them, but in general they tend to be pretty laid back.
The only trouble I've had is with hogsuckers, I had two that killed both my baby hogsuckers, they just didn't like the way they moved or something.

The one I have now gets along with everyone. Longear, shadow bass, red devil, largemouth, etc. He never starts trouble, he just defends himself if someone starts trouble with him.

In a 29g I think they'd show aggression though because they'd be cramped. Most sunfish would. There's no way to establish territories in a 29g tank, they'd probably tear each other up.

Fair enough!!! Mine is in a 220, and he has his end of the tank. So maybe your right. But more than one in a 29 would be major problems!!!

Oh, I completely agree.

I wouldn't even keep one in a 29g, but it's because I think it would be extremely bored, and I at least like watching them SOMEWHAT interact naturally.

i have one. had 6 in it as a grow out and around 3" they all started fighting. so i put 5 in my pond and kept a colorful male that ill be breeding this winter.
