Hi everyone,

There is a green sunfish at the petstore where i work. i'd love to take him home but i wanted to ask how big do they get? Can I keep him in my 80 gallon container pond with a few young koi and one goldfish or should I keep him inside? Would he be ok in a 20 gallon tank or would he need something larger? He came in with our shipment of feeder a few months ago. He was pretty small when he first came in but now he''s almost 2 inches. he's in a tank with three 2 inch lemon oscars. i've gotten somewhat attached to him and i'd love to bring him home.

Adult greens are typically 6-8", but they occasionally get up to about 12" long. I suggest a 40 gallon breeder as the minimum tank for one green. Be cautious putting him in with other fish- greens are known for their aggression!

So I suppose i can't keep him. I was planning on putting the goldfish in my 20 gallon outside so i could possibly put the sunfish in the 20 gallon by himself. so sunfish usually get 6 to 8 inches? why a 40 gallon breeder tank? wouldn't a 29 gallon be ok for him if the usually get 6 to 8 inches if he's the only fish in the tank? I just feel bad because no one has taken him yet, that and i've gotten a little attached to him. But if i can't keep him i guess i can't keep him. i wouldn't want to keep him in a thank that would be too small and become unhealthy.

because a 40 gallon breeder is wide. But iam keeping a small one in a 10gal right now and hes already tore up my bluegill and killed my sucker. you could keep in in the pond as long as all the fish are bigger then him. or keep it inside untill it outgrows the tank then put him in the pond.

So do you think he'd be ok with larger goldfish and a koi? Right now I have 2 young koi and one medium goldfish in my 80 gallon container pond. But I plan to take the 2 koi and the medium goldfish to my aunt's pond. Her pond is in ground and is nice and big. So i'll then put the young koi and my 2 fancy goldfish that are in the 20 gallon tank outside in the container pond. Then he can have the 20 gallon to himself until he gets bigger. I plan on upgrading my container pond. I was thinking maybe a 110 gallon, but i'm not sure when that will be. Hopefully sometime this summer. Does this sound like a good plan? What's really nice is that he's use to eating pellets already. He's use to a heated tank with a temp of around 78 degrees. If I do bring him home should use a heater or doesn't he need a heater?

personal preference If you want a heater or not. He might grow faster and eat more if put in a heated tank. As long as the koi or goldfish are bigger then him i dont see any problems with your plan.

I have had tho two since they were both about an inch and a half and are from the same hatch or whatever one would call it... brood maybe?

...But one has grown significantly to about four inches and the other seems stunted at about two and a half and there has been bullying on the larger ones part to the smaller
