Is it near or next to a window, whats your lighting schedule, how long has it been up and when and how long did it take to turn green...
Also have you got a pic of how bad it is, or at least try to explain how bad it is... coz just by the sound of it, seems like its an algae bloom in your tank... and reasons could be any thing from too much light to too much phosphate in your tank...
it seems to be a type of algae, from where i am it's called green water algae.
there's a chemical you can normally buy from most LFS"s to remove it.
but the cloudiness itself could be dirty water as well, what's your water change schedule?
and what sort of substrate do you have, for a while i had gravel, and the water was so cloudy, changed to sand and it's been perfect since
Green floating algae is a result of excessive lighting and excessive nutrients present in the water.
UV sterilizers can be considered however UV sterilizers destroy only that which pass the system. They are equally useful in destroying harmful bacteria and parasites but again, they must pass the system in order to be eliminated effectively.
Algaecides are extremely dangerous especially if you have fish around. Dead algae as a result from algaecides can choke the oxygen supply thus killing your beneficial bacteria and even livestocks. I suggest strongly against this method.
The most favorable and cheapest option is addition of easy to grow plants. Egeria densa, duckweeds and hornworts can rival the green floating algae in absorbing all the much needed nutrients thus, they can easily deprive the algae of their much needed food starving them to death. If you have fish that love to chew plants, consider installing shields to keep the plants away from the vegetarians while still able to do their job effectively.
Another favorable action is simply to cut down on lights and keep up with the tank maintenance to keep the nutrients regulated.
