I'm having a bit of trouble keeping my water clear. The water has a light greenish tint to it. My filter is a Fluval Fx5. Tank size is 180 gallons. Nitrates are at 40 before I did a 60 gallon water change. Stock list is as follows:

2 9-10 " Oscars
1 10" managuense
2 8-9" severums
1 4-5" Firemouth
1 5-6" Raphael Catfish

Is this a filtration problem? I had this problem a few months ago and I added a rena XP3 loaded with carbon which cleared it up in a few days. I can no longer use the xp3 as it is now running another tank. I added a few cups of activated carbon to the fx5 but it made no change in the tanks greenish to color. I'm thinking I need to add a lot more carbon. How many cups would you recommend to add to the FX5?

Thanks in advance.

The problem might be your water supply. I have the same problem on my 350 but its usually only during the summer. Water parameters change on water supplies and the source itself could be causing the algae bloom. Ive used a product called Algae Fix made by API and it works pretty well. Just clean your sponges real good after your tank clears to get all the green out of them. The best solution though, is a UV sterilizer. Do some searching on them, theres alot of info on this site about them. Hope this helps!

I have 4 tanks set up and I only have this problem on the 180 gallon so I'm thinking its not from the water supply.

Hmm then you might have just got some algae spores in that one somehow that are blooming. Does that tank possibly get more exposure to sunlight than the others? The Algae Fix might fix that tank in just a few days. Its worked wonders for me in the past with the green water problem, and its never stressed my fish. The only thing I think it is harmful to is Inverts.

This tank has no direct sunlight and actually has very little natural light. The lighting for this tank is by a single 20 watt bulb. This light is only temporary as I'm looking to get betting lighting.
