Hi. I want to keep a GT in my 55 gallon. Can I keep a pair? (M AND F) or only 1? Maybe with some tankmates too?

lol we've been having some heated discussion over this very fish and tank size lately so I think your responses will be all over the board. best I can tell the consensus is ideally a 55 or 75 for one gt and 125 for a pair or 3.

Do not get a pair for that size tank. I have my pair in a 75 and have had to put in a divider as a temporary solution to their aggressive fighting.

The 55 could work for one for a while, maybe long term for a female. My girl is a little over a year old an 6". Not sure how much more she'll grow. Spawning has slowed her growth way down.

For tank mates tetras have worked best for me personally.

I would recommend you look at some slightly smaller south American species, of which you could comfortably keep a pair with some dithers in a 55. Blue acaras would be a good choice, the non-electric blue morph looks just like a smaller GT. A 55 is kind of pushing it for a GT for life, because the tank is only 12" wide.
The acaras would have plenty of room and you could do a school of tetras and some bottom dwellers like corydoras as well.

+1!

blue acaras are a great fish and you could put at least a pair in that tank.

Skip the tank mates, the GT's won't want them in there, especially if it's another cichlid. IMO, "tank mates" are for owners who just want more fish to look at disregarding the well being of their main show piece. (Kind of selfish) Enjoy what you have!

Completely agree with Gourami Swami.
You could have an interesting set up without the inevitable violence you should expect from rivulatus in that footprint.

It should also be said that a solo male gt if bought at like 2 inches could live in a 55 for at least 2 years before needing an upgrade.

My gt and from what I read many others grow very slow. Like 4-5" a year. So if you get a 2" fish after one year expect 6" or so and after 2 years maybe he hits 10" towards that time you could easily upgrade his home as a 125g are not very expensive and would be tons of space. For a solo 10" fish.
