Green terror gender

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It can go either way at that size, especially if it is not the dominant fish and on very light substrate. My male showed female characteristics until about 5-6".
I would say it is the dominant fish. Always out swimming around and never nipped but it also doesnt chase others. Its the biggest in the tank with 2 firemouths 2 eba and a convict

IMG_0716.jpgDoes anyone have an Idea on the gender of my new green terror? Thanks!IMG_0715.jpgIMG_0717.jpgCan anyone tell me gender of my juvenile green terror please?

Looks too young to tell at the moment. All the colors are washed out and it appears too small to show any defining characteristics.

thank you my friend. Is it a concern that the colors are washed as I have just received him?

It’s a normal stress response. They do this to try to blend in. If you just got it in, it’s going to need time to adjust - based on the torn fins it looks like it was getting harassed at the shop as well which would increase stress. Young cichlids also tend to not display colors as well as adults.
Given time and good care, it will color up nicely!

Just to illustrate why, we are often unable to determine sex of young fish
Above, is a young Andinoacara coerleopunctatus, cousin to your GT.
Gender is just about impossible at this stage.
Directly below, a mature female tending fry.
Note how the extensions on the paired fins extend about half way to the caudal.
and she is a bit more boxy, than the male in a pic more below

Below the male in full view.
Note the how the fins extend to the edge of the caudal, and how he is slightly more elongate, but has a more massive head.

These basic characteristics hold true of the genus Andinoacara, but do not present or become obvious until maturity.
