ive had my gt for about 6 months now. I got it at about 2.5" its now maybe 4". Ive heard that gt can sometimes grow slow, but mines going for 3" a year!!!!! This doesnt seem right. I feed it mainly flake foods but it gets the occasional bug or worm, i have it in a 55 weekly 20% water changes. So whats the deal I want a monster!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think better food,
& larger water changes would help.

yea i figured that but its not like i treat my fish terribly and have bad water, i should at least get more then 1.5" after 6 months

Start feeding it frozen bloodworms, krill, beefheart, and the occassional feeders.

oh yea i forgot i feed i bloodworms daily too, sorry i didnt add that. I know its not the most varied diet but it still seems kinda slow

Good food, lots of water changes, good current and some people say keep the temp and the low 80's

I think I've put this reply on 50 different threads recently :D

GO high protein. Think like a body builder...I know it sounds funny, but if you wana get big you gotta eat big. Go to wal mart or the nearest place you can buy red worms (small earthworms for panfish) If he/she's a little guy chop em in 2 or 3 pcs. My GT bulked up from 3" to 4 1/2"-5" in about 2 months. He was very picky about eating so I started changing about 40% of the water every Sunday too. That did the trick. I mixed in Hikari Gold cichlid pellets (the pink ones), and fed between 1 and 3 red worms per day. As far as flake, I chucked that stuff and never looked back

I also now feed Krill at least 2-3 times per week, and that has really brought out the reds and orange in the trim of his fins.

I'd go from 20% to 40% on the water changes. once per week is probably fine, but they are slow growers. MIne hit a growth spurt at around 3" but thats when I ,moved him into my 90 so that may have done it too.I have had him for a year and a half and he's gone from 1 1/2" to around 5" in that time, most of it this year since Feb.

Got any pics of this GT?

Good luck:headbang2

Lots of protein and fresh water. Frozen foods are awesome,Bloodworms,Mysis shrimps,Brine shrimp,Krill, even little silversides mine eats

Clean water is key. You need larger water changes for optimal growth.

I got mine in July at about 1". Now he is pushing 7.
