My Jack Dempsey (which I believe to be female) looks like she is either fat or could possibly be carrying eggs. Normally she likes to chill and doesn't bother anyone in the tank unless they come near her zone.

So last night I added some water to my tank (which as most people know can induce spawning behavior) and all my fish appeared to be 'activated'. This means they all lightened their colors and seemed more active.

Anyhoo, after the water adddition the Jack (Jane?) Dempsey started lightly chasing my Gold Saum all over the tank. Mind you just chasing, not attacking or anything, kind of like how my Gold Saum seems to love chasing my convict all over the place (dither like).

Does anyone think its possible that my Dempsey was trying to get my Saum's attention? There aren't any eggs but the other things that happened threw up some flags in regards to the behavior just described.

And, assuming that she was trying to get her trikky makk freak on, does anyone know if it is possible for a combination like this to actually turn into fry?

Just curious if anyone has seen anything like this.

you might be better off posting this question in the hybrid forum. maybe not, though, those guys seem obsessed with flowerhorns. for some reason.

I've noticed that.

Note that I am not trying to encourage them spawning, I am just wondering if its possible. As you know a lot of folks in the new world cichlid forums love both green terrors and JDs so I figured I would ask.

Of course the ultimate answer will be to just wait and find out.

I'm not really sure on the genetics; how closely the GT and the JD are related, and if they could reproduce.

a GT/JD mix would be pretty cool, I bet. wouldn't be a flowerhorn, anyway. let us know what happens.

I don't have my hopes up on anything happening (and not sure I want anything happening to be frank although I am not anti-hybrid). I will post more though if anything does though.

I would imagine they are too far apart for a succesful spawn, also far apart geogrpahically.

However, they migth certainly TRY, I just predict the eggs would not be fertile.

Well she (assuming she is a she) still has a fat belly and no eggs yet!

And everyone gets along perfectly (except my Pleco gets gaffled once in a while).

hmm a green dempsey

If they spawn i don't think it will result in offspring try the hybrid forum they may know better i can't think of any jack dempsey hybrids off the top of my head but that doesn't mean there aren't any
