This is my daughter's green terror all alone in a 55. I'm wondering if it's maybe low grade? The orange fringe on the fins are barely visible and it's a good 3 inches, maybe 3 1/2.. I mean, I've seen much better specimens on here with thick orange bands that are much smaller. Is there such a thing as a low grade specimen?
Also...we're hoping it's female so it will better fit her 55 gallon.
Any comments appreciated.

No I think that you can put some other fish like dollars or tetra to make his aggression high and it will induce the colors that a good specimen has and don't worry all cichlids are good pets and they love their owners even if they are "low grade".

Thanks.....and I'm not disparaging the fish at all. She/he has a great personality. I was just curious from sort of a biological viewpoint.

Yes is the short answer their are fish out there with poor genetics. Inbred or less than great quality fish being breed with each other.
Is your fish one of these? Maybe with a but.
But there are things you can do to help the looks of your fish.
Keep its tank and water pristine. Feed high quality foods. Some have color enhancers that could help some. Feed a variety. Pick a good staple pellet and then feed other things as a treat. Krill is a good one for color as well and that comes freeze dried.
There's also frozen foods to choose from.
I feed live night crawler and crayfish as well . But I know that can be harder for some to get.
