Up until the past couple weeks the end of it's tail was a full orange strip as you can see in 2 of the pictures that were taken months ago. But as you can see in the newer photos most of it is white now but along the top and bottom its still orange. Im wondering if you guys think it'll stay white as it hopefully widens out or go back to full orange and look like a regular gt? My female gt has a thick orange strip and a wider color strip at the end of the tail but also has since she was this ones size. Not to change the topic much but any guesses on whether its a male or female while im at it? Really hoping for a male, if not I've gotta start over. . .

I’m pretty sure it’s a gold saum that just has white showing from it growing. It will likely turn orange as it puts on size. You’ll see white fin edges in different kinds of fish while they are growing, it’s normal. And the orange will thicken over time.

Now, my gold/silver crosses get the white in the middle of the tail like that. But my best guess is even mine will go all orange with time too.

Yours looks like it could be a male. Can you get any clear close up side pictures to confirm? In the last picture you can kinda see the vent area, but a better picture would be helpful.

I had a hard time getting a picture but i got this one. The vent looks like a small upside down white cone. And thank you for the info on the coloring, everything makes more sense now that you explained it. Much appreciated.

Ugh, that’s tough. The picture is still really hazy.
The vent just looks so prominent for it to be a male. My females can appear pointy when only partially showing, but they are generally bigger then what would be visible for a male. That’s kinda throwing me off. That paired with lack of color in general. This one might just need more time.

Right, well i appreciate you putting in the time to help me out! I think i might end up taking it back to my lfs. My female is super colorful and i really only wanted a male for her and i guess even if mine is a male i feel as if he should have more color by now. Besides, i picked up a small(1-1.5") flowerhorn today. Surprisingly from petco! The label only said flowerhorn tho lol so idk what kind. Im going to make a thread on that, maybe you'll be able to help me with that as well? Thanks again!! Idk what i would do without monsterfishkeepers.

I don’t know what I’d do without this place either. Haha.

No problem, wish I could be more help.
I can understand not being too thrilled with it’s progress so far. It could be that your big female is stressing it too much. Or if it is a male perhaps he’s just not dominant at all. Not sure.
Congrats on the flowerhorn. I’m afraid I’m not too experienced with them. I had one for a bit over a month and lost it to internal parasites:( it was a hard loss. They have so much personality. Enjoy yours!
