i purchased a GT a few weeks ago for my 55 Gallon. Its Just him or her in there with a pleco. I wanted to add something else but don't want to overstock. Nothing that gets too big. Not really looking to upgrade tank size for a couple of years. I am running a aqua clear 70 and a 110 HOB's. Thanks for any info. also canyon tell if GT is male or female?civ%QbYUTQKCMhPs1dxphQ.jpgwDL+9on0SJeMPmuP6EBdTA.jpg wDL+9on0SJeMPmuP6EBdTA.jpg

id say male I have mine with a mixture of south and central American cichlids no issues but each fish has it own personality it can be hit or miss and if he is the only one in the tank now don't just and 1 fish add a couple I like keeping it odd numbers so add a couple of fish if you like that aren't delicate and you should be fine I recommend finding fish you like and then see if they are compatible

Nice fish, I would say male as well. I would not add anything, a 55 is going to be a bit small for the GT and pleco combo once the GT is fully grown, which will probably take about one or two years. If you think the tank looks empty, I would add 6 tall-bodied tetras, or maybe hatchetfish. They won't cause too much waste, and will add some movement to the tank. Adding other cichlids or territorial fish will be a bad idea in this size tank.

My guess is male. If it turns out female you NEED to breed that.

I second most things that Swami said, except that hatchetfish will probably either get eaten or jump out of the tank.

Large tetras and barbs will probably work, though I'd avoid buenos aires tetras and tiger barbs since they're so nippy.

Agree that it's male, also agreed that you should just get some big bodied tetras, not another cichlid. That GT will get around 10 to 12 inches long and will be cramped in there solo, Let alone with another big fish to fight for territory with.

Cute fish. Here is my girl, see in her fins the lack of the fancy blue spangaling. That is what leads me to say it's a male.

I agree with everyone. Male.
As it is that tank won’t even last a year. As of last month I’ve had my male a year. He was 2” when I got him. He is over 8” now and still growing.
Tall tetras are a good option like mentioned. No other cichlids for that tank.
Your boy is a cutie

Congo and columbian tetras are least likely to get eaten. Buenos aires are even bigger but are nippy, diamonds may work as well but are slightly smaller.

Hatchets are nice and tall-bodied, and stay at the surface where the cichlids don't usually swim. Not very likely to get eaten. And of course with hatchets you should have a closed top and tight lid.
Your other suggestions of Colombian tetras or congo, are good choices.
OP- you have the right idea with the tank. 55 will last him at least a year or so. Then think about upgrade.
