can anyone give me a fairly idiot proof way of telling the difference between the two? i have 2 alleged blue acara's that im sure are infact GT's
at least one is definately a GT :P
gimme a hand im terrible at identifying them, i would post pics but they dont stop swimming long enough for that.

many thanks

Pete

probably the easiest way from what all I've read is that a green terror will have orange or white trim on both the dorsal fin and the tail whereas a blue acara has only orange trim on the dorsal fin. also, comparatively the GT's orange dorsal trim usually will be thicker than the trim of a Blue acara.

there are other ways as well...for instance if you have a BA and GT of equal length, the BA should be taller bodied while the GT is more elongated. the mouth shape is also different.

:)

Ain't google great.

google is the shizzle!
however there still at a very small stage and are quite pale for GT's but both appear to have an orange band across the dorsal and back fins. so i was at odds as to whats what!
also one is very dominant and quite alot bulkier, the other is quite submissive and a little smaller build, he also usually has very dark colouration.
the difference in agressiveness made me think perhaps i had on GT on acara.. im happy with whatever i just wondered!

Petej can you possibly post any piccys? just sit there awhile they will stop swimming
I recently was in a quandry about a cichlid I bought and the guys and gals on this site put me in the right direction.

There are at least three species of "Blue Acara" that are found in the pet trade. I have had some specimens from Colombia that had white edges on their fins. These fish were either Aequidens coeruleopunctatus or Aequidens latifrons. The true A.pulcher is from Trinidad and is not seen very often in shops. You will see the A.sp aff.pucher from Venezuela for sale. They are the fish with red and orange fins.

well i'll try!
bought them from the LFS i work at, they were labelled as Blue Acara's (probably not the true strain as you say) and my mate said at least half of them were GT's :(
i'll try and get some snaps after uni
