If you think you're feeding it enough you probably are. The 'Feed what they can eat for 3 minutes worth' is not a good rule to follow either because Cichlids will probably eat themselves to death. Important thing that this is teaching you is that Cichlids will be Cichlids, if they see you near the tank, especially if you look like you're going for the food bag, they will want food.

I feed twice daily, and only enough so that I think that's all they could digest without a problem (Usually rounds out to 2 Mini Hikari pellets per meal for my smaller fish). Fish can survive on very little to no food so don't be overly concerned about under-feeding them, if they're getting 2 meals a day they'll be fine, just be sure to feed a varied diet. My fish will be in the corner wanting food if I'm standing in front of the tank.
