Hey guys:) Next week im gonna be getting a 350 (uk litre) tank. I have been looking at GT's for a while. Ive never kept GT's before but i just love the colours on the males, their attitude, and just the overall beauty and personality of these magnificent fish. Now today i went to visit my LFS, i was initially enquiring about buying an RO system, and happened to see about 10-12 GT's. These fish were very small, about 1/3rd of an inch an in what seemed to be perfect health. Ideally i want a pair for my new tank so i can eventually spawn these fish. so if i may, i have some questions:-

1. How many juvenles shall i buy?
2. Is there any way to sex these fish at such an early age? i dont wanna buy a load only to find i have a lot of males fighting and tearing each other to peices.
3. would the juveniles be ok in my 55gal with 4 jewel juveniles till my new tank has cycled?
4. These tiny juvenliles will have a 350 Litre tank all to themselves to grow out in and hopefully pair up in. Is there anything i should be aware of? any comments will me most welcome.

thanks, James Gil.

Anyone?

Personally I wouldn't buy them. They are waaaaaay too small, and they are not fast growing fish. If you feed them nonstop and do massive waterchanges, they grow reasonably quickly, but I think you would be better off buying several at a larger size.

6 is a good number to start with though.

Well i went back to the shop, and they had just gotten more GT juveniles, these were about 1" long. So i got myself 5 to begin with. Even at 1" long, 2 of the fish are starting to get an orange tail, mostly tho they look dull in colour. You can see tho that they are gonna be nice fishes, i have them in a 55 gal with some cories and 2 angels untill i get my new tank (next week) Hope fully they will all be ok in there for a few weeks till my new tank has cycled. Im really looking forward to growing these new fish out in my new tank and if all goes well get a spawn off them in the future. I shall add pics as soon as i can get these little buggers to hold still.

Congratulations!

GT's are one of my favorites.
Beauty and personality, and the males can be very mean when they reach adulthood.

One thing to watch for, because it happened to me twice. They will jump out of the tank if given even a small crack. It was an adult male that did it both times. The first time I found him in time to save him, the second time I didn't.

Thanks for the reply. At what size / age will i be able to determine the sex of the fish? If im honest id like 2 pairs. And mostly i just want a big colourfull male for my females to produce nice fry.
