hi, my green terrors have spawned in a clay pot last night, the parents are doing a great job defending, however, every now and then a convict or flowerhorn will get past and steal one. the tank is a community tank 6'x2.5"x2.5" , that is stocked with one very large oscar that is quite peaceful, 2 flowerhorns, 2 green texas, 3 convicts, 4 bay snook, a dwarf gourami, and 4 green terrors ( all fish except oscar about 8 -10cm)

i wont be able to feed them in that tank when they hatch so i was wondering at what stage is it safe to remove the eggs? should i remove the eggs and parents and move them to a sererate tank now? or wait till they have hatched?

and if i have to remove them what is tthe best way? air hose siphon?

any advice is much appreciated.

thanks

I would move the parents and the eggs(on the pot) to another tank, make sure you use water from the tank they are currently in, and if possible don't let the eggs touch the air. You can also wait til they hatch and use a siphon to pull them out, keep your other container close to the same height as the tank to not cause a strong siphon, which can kill the fry.

You can raise the eggs/fry without the parents but they normally do a better job then you can.

Hope this helped.

i was just worried that iff i moved the eggs with the parents, they wouldnt recognise them and eat them all

add a divider and keep the GT and their frys on one side

When moving eggs with parents, I have never had a problem with the parents accepting them again, but a divider would also work. I personally don't like the look of dividers in my main tank, but that is totally up to you. You might lose them when they start swimming, they can fit through the egg crate.

Let us know what you decided and how it works out.

personally i'd wait till they are freeswimming and just move the fry using a hose like one you would use for a water change. if you want the pair to continue breeding and not have to do this every time then you could move them to another tank. just be wary because moving a pair will not always wind up with the pair bond reforming.

thanks guys, there all good now, i started off with a divider in the main tank untill they started freeswimming, the parents had a pretty hard time keeping them away from the evil side beyond the eggcrate, so i set a 4ft up and moved the fry and the parents there, the only problem is it was a oldschool tank with a mirror background (why on earth people would make a mirror background confuses me) so after they got sick of fighting thier reflections they settled in. just started a brine shrimp and microworms culture, so hopefully theyll be eating soon

also is a big sponge filter ok for sole filtration of a 4ft tank? im a bit scared of putting a powerhead or canister in at this stage, maybe a foam pad over the inlet?
