just brought a pair from the pet shop. only 5cm. what environment should they be set up in? what foods any advice helpful

they are not as aggressive as the name they eat pellets, flakes . bloodworms and krill, not hard to keep or take care of

go to the CA/Sa cichlid forum lots of info for you there.
temps 76 to 80f
ph 7.0 ok

Great fish, what size tank do you have? They will grow pretty big maybe 30cm for males. They would need 60 gallons at a bare minimum for an adult pair, if they turn out not to be a pair, and they really fight you will need bigger. Course either way bigger tank is better for them. And they eat pretty much everything.

my tank is 12 foot building it from ply. got them in a grow out tank. there only 10cm each

You just said they were 5cm in the OP.

Shouldn't you have researched this before purchasing them?

Feed a good quality small pellet, I use and recommend Hikari Cichlid Staple, Cichlid Gold, and Cichlid Bio-Gold.

:iagree: this is what your best bet is.

good quality pellets and some frozen/freeze dried stuff occasionally. I use hikari gold, Frozen brine shrimp (BS LOL) and chopped worms from the garden. (except its winter so I haven't found any recently.

so you know there known to be and useually are slow growers

Pretty easy to keep cichlid. Excepts just about any food. Grows slow.
