I was sold 2 Green Terrors by my LFS. When I brought them home, they look just like the Blue Acaras that I had before that died. They have the orange on there fin tips. I read that bought these fish are commonly know to be mistaken for each other. How can I actually tell what I have. It doesn't matter to me which I have, they are a beautiful heathy pig of a fish and are growing rapidly. They are on a diet for flakes and blood worms.

Oh and how can I tell the sex? I am hoping for a good pair that will breed.
One so far is growing fast than the other and will chase each other around.

Pick them up and vent them to sex them...if the bottom of the anus in pointed towards tail its a male, if its round its female

The two species have easily identifiable differences in the way they swim, but I guess the easiest way is this.

Gold/White down the tips of the whole caudal fin = GT/Saum
Blue Acaras have yellow/orange/white tips on the dorsal and some of the caudal, maybe the top 1/3, but never the whole lot.

look at this http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183780. i posted pics of both and the differences are clear. this should clear up any confusion.

japes has it right though a very reliable way to tell is the tail. if the edge has a thick ban of orange then its most likely a saum (GT) and if its a faint orange on the edge but no bold/striking line then its most likely a blue acara.

however, i have heard of blue acaras having the orange band on the edge of the caudal(tail) fin but i have never seen pics of these fish. when challenged to show proof the guys never provided pics. so how much truth there is to it i dont know.

but yeah show us a reasonable quality pic. we will be able to tell you in a second.

From the pics ive seen that are labeled GT, I have 2 nice little GTs. I just noticed that the bigger and more colorful of the 2 has a bump starting to form on his head. So he is definate male. The other one is not was briliant in color and seems to change dark ness of its markings everyday. Consider what you guys told me about looking at there poop holes, it looks the same so do I have 2 males or maybe one of each? Since I got them at together at the LFS pretty good cahnce there siblings? Oh and the Bigger one is always chasing/playing? with the other one.

yes, green terrors at a small size will have that band of orange. I have yet to come across a 2" acara with this band. Our 5" acara has the faintist orange.
