Will a 55g work for a breeding pair? I'm thinking about getting a couple of these little fellas. Do they do good with plants? How do you tell the sexes apart?

55g will only be okay for one, i would go bigger if i was u just to make sure. i say a 90g would be idle for a pair, my gt did well with plants, didn't bother him. sexing just look for the hump on its forehead. if it has a hump its a male, for a female i believe that females have redish color near the anal fins. a bit smaller.

Oh. I don't have anything bigger than a 55 gallon. My parents won't let me get anything bigger. What are some medium-sized CA/SA cichlids that are easy to care for and breed that could do good in a 55g? I kinda want something at least 4". I don't really want angels 'cause they'll more than likely eat the fry. The only New World cichlid I've bred before are cons, and my first generation baby(the rest became food) now has fry(she killed her mate). I want something that's attractive and I can breed, but also a little bit more of a challange than cons.

oh well in that case just go with 1 gt.
you can try a jewel cichlid. not sure about its size but wat i have heard that they dont grow as big as GTs. i could be wrong, just keep doing ur research and try to combine wat u want and wat u can keep.

Alright. Thanks for your replies.

suer thing dude, if u wana wait for more replies from sumone else it wouldnt hurt. good luck anyways:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Ok. I'm thinking about firemouths now. They stay smaller than GT's; around 6" max.

actually i would have thought a 55 would be ok for a BREEDING pair..i have seen people do breeding pairs of JD's in 55 and a male JD and male GT so i cant see why a breeding pair wouldnt be ok.

fake plants would work and make caes etc.

males have more pointy longer dorsal fins females have more rounded off.

heres a pic of my dads old male. ill try find a female sumwhere.
